TEF Gold Rated University, Coventry University London used MindTap to Help Students Reach their Potential

Posted on: 25/10/2018 | Edited by: Emily Marks

Coventry University London, a campus of Coventry University, Coventry is one of the largest providers of business related degree courses in Europe. The University’s commitment to providing exceptional opportunities and teaching to its 29,000 students has recently won them a Gold rating for outstanding teaching and learning in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

‘A rating of gold means that a university has demonstrated the highest-quality teaching standards and is consistently outstanding. The university also offers students outstanding physical and digital resources.’[1]

For Dr. Zeenat Soobedar, the desire to deliver quality teaching to 260 2nd year Finance and Accounting students led her to trialling MindTap with 94 of her students. Dr Soobedar wanted to find interactive and engaging teaching resources that would help students digest complex subject matter:

“I was looking for interaction and engagement, a platform where the material is simple and easily accessible to many students”.

What challenges did the lecturer face?

For Finance and Accounting students on the Data Management and Analysis course, course content is challenging; it covers a lot of complex statistical content which needs to be understood by students of varying academic abilities.

Dr. Soobedar found students often struggled to digest such complex content and reach their full potential. She found that it could be difficult to get students to interact with and be engaged with the course content or to work and study independently.

How did MindTap help?

Upon consultation with her local Cengage Learning Consultant, Dr Soobedar decided to adopt MindTap alongside Business Analytics: Data Analysis & Decision Making, 6th Edition by Albright and Winston.

MindTap was chosen due to its ability to combine a range of content including readings, video content, activities and assessment into one learning path. As well the capability to allow Lecturers to add their own material to MindTap and customise its existing content. Dr. Soobedar’s found that MindTap’s flexible and interactive nature:

  • Encouraged students to interact with and immerse themselves in the course content
  • Improved student engagement
  • Provided materials that were easily accessible and relevant to the course
  • Enabled students to work and study independently
  • Broke complex subject matters down into simple, manageable and easily accessible chunks
